Having been exposed to a large number of Star Trek episodes (my husband is a fan and one of the boys has inherited his science-fiction loving genes) I've realised how unrealistic our ideas about the future are.

George Orwell got it nearly right in 1984 - the interactive television on the whole time and security cameras everywhere. But the TV sci-fi guys have pictured a future where everybody is slim and can fit into those skin-tight Star Trek suits

The truth is we are all getting fatter. By the year 2400 they'll need bigger seats on the flight deck of the Enterprise and the emergency medical hologram will be dealing primarily with type two diabetes and be ordering wider tricorders

But let's not order the Lycra fat suit just yet. Whatever the future holds for the rest of the population you don't need to have a fat future.

So some tips to survive holiday eating - so you'll stay out of the fat Lycra!

  • Don't go berserk with holiday eating - chowing down on everything that hits your plate 'because I'm on vacation' is just plain silly. You can do that once or twice a week but not every day.

  • Beware of BBQs - barbecue food is very meaty, very fatty, and very unhealthy. Go for a plain steak rather than a fat-filled sausage or burger and nibble, don't gobble. Although it's quite acceptable to go back for fifth helpings at barbecues you don't have to do that!

  • Keep an eye on how much you drink - it's easy to top up your fluid intake with fizzy drinks. This also dramatically increases your calorie intake for no nutritional benefit.

So are there things you can do?

  • Eat more fruit, especially the kind of fruit you don't get at home.

  • If you have access to a holiday gym, use it - particularly in a hot climate you may not want to exercise outside but the gyms are air conditioned.

  • Pamper yourself with a facial or massage.

Above all, relax, enjoy, and live long and prosper!
