Owls Don't Shop at Supermarkets

The other day the owl was awake early. Or late depending on your point of view. Early for us, late for the owl.

In fact when I woke and heard him I knew it was nearly daylight. Sure enough, his song segued into the dawn chorus. Sometimes I hear him in the evening before going to bed. What does he do all night?

The hoot of the owl is a mournful, atmospheric but somehow comforting sound. I know the world is safe when he's going about his nocturnal business. Which probably consists of ridding our neighbourhood of small furry animals. And this is less comforting.

I know we need predators otherwise the place would be overrun with mice, but the hunting aspect of an owl's behaviour is something I don't want to think about. David Attenborough I am not.

The owl, though, knows what's good for him. Fresh, free-range, no supermarket ready meals.

Maybe we can learn something from the owl.
