A Note From Liz

Hello!

My daughter started University recently, and came back to get all the things she forgot the first time she left. She got her laptop, printer, mobile phone etc, etc. I remembered that the first time I went to university the most technical piece of equipment I needed was a hole punch to file the bits of paper properly.

I was able to attend an alumni weekend recently and went to several lectures from renowned experts who were talking about tackling obesity and the weight of the nation. They were interesting and eminent speakers, but even they couldn’t say exactly why we are all getting fatter. It’s not just eating more and exercising less – there is some evidence that we actually consume fewer calories than we did 30 years ago! Clearly there are aspects of our lifestyle that make weight loss difficult but we don’t know what they are.

So good health and good weight is still down to eating good quality food and increasing our activity levels. No magic formula as yet but I’ll keep you posted!

North By Northwest to Reach Your Goal

North by Northwest. That’s the Hitchcock movie with the crop-dusting scene. And Mount Rushmore. And a plot with more twists and turns than a corkscrew.

Cary Grant, playing innocent advertising guy Mr Thornhill, is mistaken for a spy and ends up being wanted as a murderer all over America. He has to escape from his pursuers many times, over and over again thinking he is free of them. He also has to work out who he can trust, as those who appear to help him are not what they seem.

Isn’t this a good metaphor for weight loss?

The road to slimness is full of obstacles, twists and turns. We think we have it all under control then there’ll be a birthday, or a celebration dinner, or a night out with friends.

And some of those friends may be less than helpful when they encourage us to have “Just a small piece of cake” or “One won’t hurt you” or “You’ve got to eat something”.

Just remember Cary Grant running through the cornfield. He kept on going. And what did he do on Mount Rushmore? Kept on going. He was hanging on by his fingertips but he didn’t let go, even when the villain stood on his fingers.

After all that adventure our intrepid hero marries the girl (having told her that his first two wives left him because nothing ever happened to him!) and we assume it’s happily ever after with the villains caught or dead.

So if you feel at times you are hanging on by your fingertips, just remember that persistence will win out in the end. Keep on going, and put the villains and obstacles behind you.

And happy eating!

About Liz

I have been looking after people’s health for over fifteen years.

With a background in biochemistry I was initially interested in how to boost metabolism to promote weight loss and how to feel satisfied after eating – what the nutritionists call “satiety”.  All of these things are important for weight loss but for many people the biggest change comes about when they conquer their emotional eating.

I know this because as a child I was stocky, and then became chubby, then fat! I hated exercise and loved food. And my love of food went way beyond physical hunger.

I still love food, but now I know how to enjoy and how to set limits around it – all without feeing deprived.

With a training in coaching and NLP as well as my knowledge of biochemistry and nutrition, I am ideally placed to solve your problems with emotional eating.

Liz’s credentials…

  • Degree in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge (that’s where I get my biochemistry knowledge).
  • Degree in Nutritional Therapy (that’s where the nutrition knowledge comes from).
  • Module leader in Masters Level  Module Tackling Obesity at the Centre for Nutrition Education & Lifestyle Management. On this module I lecture on the biochemistry of eating and starvation, satiety mechanisms, stress and obesity and emotional eating.
  • Fifteen years experience as a herbalist and health coach.
  • Practitioner level qualification in NLP, Coaching and Stress Management.
And, most importantly, a love of food and a passion for health, wellness and vitality!

Weight Loss Success Tips

Don’t Forget the Herbs

It’s easy as winter beckons to want to turn to the starchy vegetables and stop eating the salads. Somehow increasingly dark days make us want to tuck into the leek and potato soup with huge chunks of crusty bread.

Resist the temptation! All those chunky winter veg were fine in the days when we walked several miles to work every day and lived in houses with no central heating. But in our cosseted modern life we don’t need all that starchy stuff.

If the carbs beckon, try sweet potato instead of ordinary potato. Have the chunky bread at lunch time and then make sure you get exercise later in the day.

At night you’ll feel lighter and better if you stick to salads and crunchy veg. with some lean protein.

And to bring the taste of summer to your meal, don’t forget the herbs. A little basil or rosemary or oregano goes a long way and you can buy these fresh herbs all year round. (You use dry ones? Shame on you, get some fresh herbs on your kitchen windowsill!)

If you get the winter blues, have a SMALL potato at bedtime – this may boost your serotonin levels and help with sleep problems and depression. And get some mid-day sunshine if you can.

Foodie Fact

If you are in or around London at the end of October be sure to visit Borough Market, which is having its annual apple day on Sunday October 26th.  Just remember the clocks go back that weekend so set off early enough to enjoy it.

Borough Market is a great place to visit, with a wide range of local foods for sale, normally open Thursday to Saturday.

Give Something Back

Give something back.

Take a look at the work of the Circle of Women – Reach and Teach Across Borders. A group of Harvard undergraduates have got together to raise funds for a girls’ school in Afghanistan.

When so many of us have benefited from education it’s difficult to comprehend how limiting women’s lives can be without it.

The school list is already oversubscribed and it’s not even built yet, so they need your help! Take a look at their website. And give generously.
