A Note From Liz

Hello!

Grrr!!! November! Long nights, dark, damp days! Double Grrr!!!

My son says I use too many exclamations marks and he has a point. But I need to do something to inject some excitement into November. Now that the fireworks are over (Nov 5th) and we don’t have Thanksgiving (Nov 27th) we are now settling down for the run up to Christmas.

Soon we’ll all be hunting presents for awkward relatives, trying to remember where we put the Christmas lights and doing United Nations-style negotiations over whose house we go to for the big day.

So… in the middle of all this don’t let the healthy eating slide. At over 200 calories per mince pie you can’t afford to indulge too much too soon.

The more restrained you are now the more virtuous you will feel when you get into the party season.

And for more holiday tips see the article on the right.

Rear Window

In this Hitchcock move, the amiable but earnest Jimmy Stewart is confined to his New York apartment by a broken leg and thinks he has witnessed a murder. Sitting at his window he sees nearly all the activities in the apartments opposite. The gorgeous Grace Kelly is skeptical but gamely volunteers to help him with his investigations.

It’s a wonderful cross-section of New York life, capturing the mundane and the personal touches of lives across the way.

And it really isn’t clear whether he has witnessed a murder, as there could be other explanations for what he has seen.

The major delight of this movie is the way in which Hitchcock builds up the suspense. One of the minor delights is the way it portrays everyday life, including people having their meals.

What would it be like if they put the movie cameras on your kitchen window? Would you eat differently?

It's a thought, isn’t it. Choosing healthy foods, using the posh cutlery, stir frying instead of deep frying, cooking from scratch instead of eating ready meals.

We might do it all differently if we were being filmed for a movie.

So the next time you are foraging in the fridge and you don’t know whether you can be bothered to cook, decide to be the star of your own movie.

Whatever is going on in the apartment above or below, or the house next door, there is no reason why you should not be the Healthy Eating Queen! or the King of the Posh Nosh!

Happy eating!

About Liz

I have been looking after people’s health for over fifteen years.

With a background in biochemistry I was initially interested in how to boost metabolism to promote weight loss and how to feel satisfied after eating – what the nutritionists call “satiety”.  All of these things are important for weight loss but for many people the biggest change comes about when they conquer their emotional eating.

I know this because as a child I was stocky, and then became chubby, then fat! I hated exercise and loved food. And my love of food went way beyond physical hunger.

I still love food, but now I know how to enjoy and how to set limits around it – all without feeling deprived.

With a training in coaching and NLP as well as my knowledge of biochemistry and nutrition, I am ideally placed to solve your problems with emotional eating.

Liz’s credentials…

  • Degree in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge (that’s where I get my biochemistry knowledge).
  • Degree in Nutritional Therapy (that’s where the nutrition knowledge comes from).
  • Module leader in Masters Level  Module Tackling Obesity at the Centre for Nutrition Education & Lifestyle Management. On this module I lecture on the biochemistry of eating and starvation, satiety mechanisms, stress and obesity and emotional eating.
  • Fifteen years experience as a herbalist and health coach.
  • Practitioner level qualification in NLP, Coaching and Stress Management.
And, most importantly, a love of food and a passion for health, wellness and vitality!

Weight Loss Success Tips

Happy Thanksgiving to all my US readers

I’ll let you indulge on the day itself (that’s what feast days are for). But be kind to your digestive system and your figure by not eating too much. Here are some tips to help:

- Have water alongside your wine. Alternate water and wine – you’ll stay hydrated and drink fewer calories.

- Splash out on sparkling water to look more festive
Or have champagne – it’s lower in sugar (honest!)

- Go easy on the snacks – the house may be full of food but that’s because the hostess wants the place to look good. You don’t have to eat it all. If desperate, have a competition with yourself to see how long you can make a pretzel last.

- If you are the hostess, don’t feel you have to buy enough food to feed the whole of Texas - even if you live in Texas. You’ll only end up eating the leftovers.

- If you do overindulge, just forget about it and start afresh the next day. Don’t go into gloom and doom about your overeating, it’s a minor misdemeanour not a federal offence. Put your overeating in your past and move on into your healthy eating future.

Happy Holidays!

Foodie Fact

Beating the Winter Blues

I once got a catalogue from an Australian company that now has a UK base. In those days it was purely Antipodean and in March I got information about winter cough remedies, while in September it was news about hay fever. It took me a while to work out that their seasons were reversed.

Well now in the northern hemisphere we are into winter metabolism. The body tends to want to eat higher fat foods and winter stodge.

And as some people have brains that easily get depressed in winter, it’s important to keep up the essential fatty acid content of the diet.

Naturally they should come from healthy fats - oily fish and nuts & seeds. So there is no excuse for burgers and French fries (you kind of knew I’d say that, didn’t you?). But this time I’m particularly singing the praises of avocados.

Here we have the Hass avocados in the shops and they have a wonderful nutty flavour. Avocados are rich in protein, monosaturated fats, vitamin E and carotenes.

Yes, they are a fatty food, but have an avocado as your main meal with salad or vegetables. The texture of avocado goes well with these crispy foods and if you avoid the creamy dressing the meal will be healthy.

Give Something Back

Take a look at the work of the Circle of Women – Reach and Teach Across Borders. A group of Harvard undergraduates have got together to raise funds for a girls’ school in Afghanistan.

When so many of us have benefited from education it’s difficult to comprehend how limiting women’s lives can be without it.

The school list is already oversubscribed and it’s not even built yet, so they need your help! Take a look at their website. And give generously.
