A Note From Liz

Hello!

And welcome to summer!

Unusually this month I’m giving more direct nutrition advice and focusing less on emotional eating. This is to give you a head start on dealing with the holiday season – you won’t be able to come back in September and say I didn’t give you good advice!

Meanwhile we are almost in bucket-and-spade mode… not quite building sandcastles on the beach but certainly getting all the holiday equipment together.

One of my children is going on a sea trip with the Royal Navy (though I think the RN go on voyages, not trips), then he’s off to Italy and then Spain. Planning that lot takes endless lists and shopping trips. Then I have a gap year daughter returning and my son’s American girl friend arriving.

So if the newsletters over the summer are a wee bit shorter, you know why!

Beam Me Up Scotty!

Having been exposed to a large number of Star Trek episodes (my husband is a fan and one of the boys has inherited his science-fiction loving genes) I’ve realised how unrealistic our ideas about the future are.

George Orwell got it nearly right in 1984 – the interactive television on the whole time and security cameras everywhere. But the TV sci-fi guys have pictured a future where everybody is slim and can fit into those skin-tight Star Trek suits.

The truth is we are all getting fatter. By the year 2400 they’ll need bigger seats on the flight deck of the Enterprise and the emergency medical hologram will be dealing primarily with type two diabetes and be ordering wider tricorders.

But let’s not order the Lycra fat suit just yet. Whatever the future holds for the rest of the population you don’t need to have a fat future.

So some tips to survive holiday eating - so you’ll stay out of the fat Lycra!

  • Don’t go berserk with holiday eating – chowing down on everything that hits your plate “because I'm on vacation” is just plain silly. You can do that once or twice a week but not every day.
  • Beware of BBQs - barbecue food is very meaty, very fatty, and very unhealthy. Go for a plain steak rather than a fat-filled sausage or burger and nibble, don’t gobble. Although it’s quite acceptable to go back for fifth helpings at barbecues you don’t have to do that!
  • Keep an eye on how much you drink – it’s easy to top up your fluid intake with fizzy drinks. This also dramatically increases your calorie intake for no nutritional benefit.

So are there any things you can do?

  • Eat more fruit, especially the kind of fruit you don’t get at home.
  • If you have access to a holiday gym, use it - particularly in a hot climate you may not want to exercise outside but the gyms are air conditioned.
  • Pamper yourself with a facial or massage.

Above all, relax, enjoy, and live long and prosper!

About Liz

I have been looking after people’s health for over fifteen years.

With a background in biochemistry I was initially interested in how to boost metabolism to promote weight loss and how to feel satisfied after eating – what the nutritionists call “satiety”.  All of these things are important for weight loss but for many people the biggest change comes about when they conquer their emotional eating.

I know this because as a child I was stocky, and then became chubby, then fat! I hated exercise and loved food. And my love of food went way beyond physical hunger.

I still love food, but now I know how to enjoy and how to set limits around it – all without feeing deprived.

With a training in coaching and NLP as well as my knowledge of biochemistry and nutrition, I am ideally placed to solve your problems with emotional eating.

Liz’s credentials…

  • Degree in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge (that’s where I get my biochemistry knowledge).
  • Degree in Nutritional Therapy (that’s where the nutrition knowledge comes from).
  • Module leader in Masters Level  Module Tackling Obesity at the Centre for Nutrition Education & Lifestyle Management. On this module I lecture on the biochemistry of eating and starvation, satiety mechanisms, stress and obesity and emotional eating.
  • Fifteen years experience as a herbalist and health coach.
  • Practitioner level qualification in NLP, Coaching and Stress Management.
And, most importantly, a love of food and a passion for health, wellness and vitality!

The information in this newsletter is not intended to replace medical advice. If you feel you need to lose weight and you have any medical problems please consult your doctor before starting a diet.

Weight Loss Success Tips

One bite at a time!

That’s the answer to the question “how do you eat an elephant?”

Now I have no desire to eat a pachyderm but it’s a very good way of describing the approach to a huge problem.

How do you lose 20lbs?
Or 200lbs?
Or anything in between?

One bite at a time.

It is what you do on a day-to-day basis that counts, consistently paying attention to the type and quantity of food that you eat.

In my coaching I encourage my clients to have a vision of their (slimmer) future, but sometimes it helps to focus just on the now or the immediate future.

Ask yourself “what am I going to eat today?” and do the best you can.

Then tomorrow, you do it again.

Each day you are only tackling one day at a time – a realistic and achievable goal for everyone.

Foodie Fact

This month eat any kind of fresh fruit.

It’s best if it is in season, organic and local but all fruit is bursting with plant pigments called flavonoids.

They’re antioxidant, help keep your arteries clear, and reduce inflammation.
Plus, when you eat fruit the flavonoids are bundled up with lots of other fruit goodies such as carotenoids and vitamin C.
Thirst quenching too.

What’s not to like?

Give Something Back

Give something back.

Take a look at the work of the Circle of Women – Reach and Teach Across Borders. A group of Harvard undergraduates have got together to raise funds for a girls’ school in Afghanistan.

When so many of us have benefited from education it’s difficult to comprehend how limiting women’s lives can be without it.

The school list is already oversubscribed and it’s not even built yet, so they need your help! Take a look at their website. And give generously.
